MHI Receives Order to Modify Senoko Incineration Plant in Singapore -- New Equipment to Enable Expanded Intake Volume of Stoker Furnace Incinerator --
Tokyo, September 26, 2014 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order to modify the Senoko Waste-to-Energy Plant (SWTE) located in the Senoko district of Singapore. The order calls for configuration of equipment to boost the waste treatment volume of the existing stoker furnace(Note) type incinerator. The modification work is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2016.
SWTE was designed and constructed by MHI and completed in 1992. Since 2009 the facility has been operated and managed by Keppel Seghers Engineering Singapore Pte. Ltd. (Keppel Seghers), a subsidiary of Keppel Infrastructure Holdings Pte. Ltd., a leading public-sector infrastructure firm. SWTE has a concession agreement with Singapore's National Environment Agency to treat up to 2,100 tons per day (tpd) of municipal waste. The modifications will allow SWTE's contracted capacity to increase by up to 10 Percent 2,310 tpd.
The order for SIP's modification work was received from KSES through Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering & Services Private Ltd. (MIES), an MHI subsidiary in Singapore. The core work will be performed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Environmental and Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. (MHIEC), an MHI group company based in Yokohama. MHIEC's technologies will be applied to increasing the plant's incineration processing volume by strengthening the heat and corrosion resistance of parts of the furnaces and boilers.
MHIEC took over MHI's waste treatment plant business in 2008, acquiring MHI's technology in environmental systems and its abundant expertise in the construction and operation of waste to energy plants in Japan and overseas. On the strength of these assets, MHIEC today is in a prime position to provide comprehensive solutions encompassing all aspects from plant construction to operation.
In Singapore, MHI has constructed three waste-to-energy facilities to date. These include the Tuas South Incineration Plant (TSIP) completed in 2000, which has one of the world's largest processing capacities: 4,320 tpd. MHI also has an unrivaled delivery record in Southeast Asia, and today the company enjoys an outstanding reputation throughout this market.
MIES was established in 2010 and undertakes a full range of engineering projects, with a focus on environmental and chemical plants. In 2013, it augmented its original sales activities - relating to environmental and chemical plants, water solutions, marine machinery and engines, shipbuilding and ocean development, refrigeration systems, and material handling systems - with business in environmental solutions and began seeking business in this new area within Southeast Asia. Now, in collaboration with MHIEC, MIES is directing its full energies into waste-to-energy plant construction and servicing.
Going forward MHI, leveraging this first overseas order for full-scale follow-up servicing in the waste-to-energy field, will devote its resources to expanding business overseas, especially within Southeast Asia.
