Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor International Corporation (MCO-I), a leader in the design and manufacturing of compressors, steam turbines and associated auxiliaries, has transformed steam turbine maintenance with the integration of Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT).

This breakthrough technology is a game-changer in ensuring sustained efficiency and safety, with the endurance and dependability of steam turbines being paramount in energy production.

Originally used in the medical field, MCO-I utilizes PAUT to locate minuscule cracks in steam turbine rotors that would be otherwise unobservable using traditional inspection techniques. PAUT offers unparalleled accuracy in defect detection, providing plant operators with real-time insights to make informed decisions about maintenance schedules, thereby optimizing turbine performance and longevity.

Justin Fleming, Customer Service Business Director, MCO-I, said, “Incorporating PAUT into our steam turbine maintenance is a huge step for us. This technology not only boosts out ability to bring value to our customers through advanced inspection techniques, but also gives our clients real data to make better decisions on maintaining their equipment longer and more reliably.”

PAUT inspections are available to all MCO-I clients as an addition to their service package. Recommended with a service life of 10 years, MCO-I provides maintenance on any OEM rotor when clients provide vital information regarding the size, location, environment and original geometry of the machine.

As steam turbine technology evolves, MCO-I remains at the forefront, offering solutions that redefine industry standards. The incorporation of PAUT signifies a pivotal moment in the pursuit of enhanced efficiency, safety and longevity in energy production.
