Offshore Oil & Gas Production

The compressors used for offshore facilities must be of compact design and allow for easy installation and timely maintenance work. At the same time, they must maintain high reliability to ensure stable operation on a foundation that is continually moving.

The photo at rightbelow shows an offshore gas drilling facility which is extracting gas from the Pacific Ocean.
It is located in the sea 30 km offshore from Fukushima, where one of the largest offshore oil and gas fields in Japan is located.

The compressor in the photo at rightbelow is the first compressor in Japan which was installed on an offshore plant. It incorporates a variety of stabilization technologies which allow it to operate despite the constant movement of the sea.
So that it could be used on offshore plants where installation space is limited, special steps were taken to produce a compact layout.

Flare gas recovery compressors

The photo at rightbelow shows a flare gas recovery compressor (model 5V-9B) and drive motor during shop test prior to shipping. These units were delivered to an offshore gas drilling facility in the United Arab Emirates. This equipment recovers flare gas, which was previously considered a useless gas and burned, and allows it to be effectively used as a resource. A compact package was used so that the compressor could be installed quickly in a limited space, and so that it is easy to operate and maintain.
In order to make it compatible with the constant movement of the sea, 3-point support systems (a kind of damper system) are installed beneath the common base plate.
Because flare gas contains large amounts of highly corrosive components, corrosion-resistant materials and coating technologies are used.
On an offshore facility, a large reaction force is generated from the piping which connects to the compressor nozzle, due to the restrictions of the facility. For this reason, special steps were taken to enable the compressor to endure the force.

With the wet gas compressor in the photo at rightbelow, polymer components and other substances contained in the gas adhere to the rotor and gas passageways, frequently resulting in increased shaft vibration and diminished performance.
The technologies which we have developed over many years allow MCO compressors to deliver stable long-term operation. These compressors include technologies which reduce the adherence of these substances, and structures which allow easy disassembly and cleaning when adhering does occur.
