MHI Holds Science Class at Hidamari-no-Ie in Ritto City

On the day, MAT employees took on the role of lecturers, and conducted experiments to show that if you put familiar solutions such as vinegar, lemon, carbonated water or salt water into common mallow herbal tea, they change color, and depending on the color, one can know whether the solution is acidic, neutral or alkaline. Common mallow contains a dye called anthocyanin, which changes color depending on the properties of the solution, turning red for acid and blue to green for alkaline. For this reason, the children also extracted liquid from anthocyanin-rich grape skins and confirmed what color it changed to depending on the solution.
We hope that the children participating in the class will become more interested in science as a result of these experiments.
