PTT Executives Explore Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) Pilot Project with Yokohama and MHI, Targeting Global Climate Solutions

Carbon capture is becoming a global trend and is believed to reduce the impact of global warming. Dr.Kongkrapan Intarajang, CEO and President of PTT Public Company Limited (PTT), led a group of PTT executives, subsidiaries, and media representatives to observe the pilot project of carbon capture and utilization (Carbon Capture and Utilization - CCU) at Tsurumi Solid Waste Incineration Plant on September 5, 2024. This pilot project is a collaboration between the city of Yokohama, Tokyo Gas Company, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).

The testing began in 2023, with a capacity to capture 0.3 tons of carbon dioxide per day. The captured carbon dioxide from the exhaust of incinerators is utilized to produce methane.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group is committed to advancing CCU technology, expanding its application, and making e-methane practically usable through joint testing with local communities.

In the early 1990s, MHI collaborated with Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO) to develop the Kansai Mitsubishi Carbon Dioxide Recovery Process (KM CDR Process™) and the KS-1™ amine solvent for the removal of carbon dioxide from combustion exhaust gas.

Since then, this solvent has been delivered to 13 plants worldwide and has gained the highest global market share. This technology can capture more than 90% of carbon dioxide from target gases (with purity exceeding 99.9% by volume).

Moreover, it reduces steam usage through the company's unique energy-saving regeneration system. A demonstration project is currently underway using MHI Group's system to separate and store carbon dioxide from exhaust gases at the Tsurumi plant, then to transport it to Tokyo Gas Yokohama Techno Station for methanation process.
