For Cogeneration Power Plant in Uzbekistan
Tokyo, November 18, 2009 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order from INITEC Energia, S.A., a Spanish engineering and construction company, for a 478 megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired gas turbine combined-cycle (GTCC) power generation system with heat supply capability as cogeneration facility. The facility will be built at the Navoi Thermal Power Plant of State Joint Stock Company Uzbekenergo (SJSC Uzbekenergo), the authority under which the power industry of Uzbekistan operates. This is the first GTCC power generation system order placed with MHI by Uzbekistan. Delivery of the system is scheduled to begin in December 2010 and be completed in March 2011.
The GTCC power generation plant to be built in Navoi consists primarily of one M701F gas turbine, one steam turbine, one heat recovery steam generator and two generators. MHI will provide the gas and steam turbines and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation will supply the generators. INITEC Energia, an ACS Group company, will be responsible for overall engineering of the facility and Calik Enerji Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S., a Turkish construction company, will perform civil engineering and installation work at the site. Mitsubishi Corporation will handle the trade particulars. The ACS Group is the largest construction company in Spain and the third in Europe.
Uzbekistan became an independent state after the breakup of the former Soviet Union in 1991. Thanks to successful market-oriented economic reforms, the country has maintained a high economic growth rate of 7–9% since 2004. Along with this economic development, stable supply of electricity and efficient utilization of natural gas have been matters of immediate priority. To address these issues, Uzbekistan is conducting a program to modernize its power generation plants, including installation of high-efficiency GTCC systems in aged power and heat cogeneration plants. The latest order is part of this initiative.
With GTCC type power generation, gas and steam turbines are used in combination to generate electricity in two stages, utilizing high-temperature exhaust gas from the gas turbine. This configuration enables GTCC power plants to achieve higher thermal efficiency than non-GTCC plants such as conventional boiler steam turbine plants. Higher efficiency means that GTCC plants reduce fuel consumption relative to electricity output and emit less CO2, thus making them friendlier to the environment.
