Tokyo, July 11, 2013 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has signed agreements to participate as a risk and revenue sharing partner (RRSP) in the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-TEN aero engine powering the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Trent XWB-97 aero engine powering the Airbus A350-1000. As part of the scope of the agreement with Rolls-Royce, MHI will be responsible for the development and manufacture of components for the engines' combustion modules and the manufacture of low-pressure turbine blades for both programs and stage 1 intermediate pressure turbine disks for the Trent XWB-97.

The Trent 1000-TEN is an advanced version of the Trent 1000 engine with enhanced levels of fuel-efficiency and thrust capability designed to power all Boeing 787 aircraft variants, including the newest member of the family, the 787-10 (300-330 seats) which was launched by Boeing last month during the Paris Air Show.

The Trent XWB-97 is the exclusive engine for the Airbus A350-1000 aircraft (350 seats class), the largest variant of the Airbus A350XWB aircraft family, and will deliver 97,000 lbs thrust. This engine is being developed from the 84,000lb thrust Trent XWB, the fastest selling Trent engine, which powers the Airbus A350-800 and A350-900 aircraft variants and undertook its first flight test on an A350-900 aircraft in June.

MHI has collaborated with Rolls-Royce through participation in the Trent 1000 program since 2004 and in the 84,000lb thrust Trent XWB program since 2008. For MHI, participation in the new programs is an ideal opportunity to strengthen its international competitiveness in core engineering technology and further expand the aero-engine business.

In the area of commercial aero-engines, MHI has partnered in various aero engine programs including Pratt & Whitney PW4000 and International Aero Engines (IAE) V2500 in addition to business with Rolls-Royce. Boosted by the latest participation in the two new engine programs, the company will now further focus its efforts to expand and enhance its involvement in commercial aero-engines.
