Tokyo, March 11, 2014 - To mark the third anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) today launched a page on its corporate website dedicated to reporting on the various initiatives taken by MHI Group companies to date in support of disaster recovery in Tohoku. In addition to describing the content of those initiatives comprehensively for easy understanding by victims of the disaster and other stakeholders, the new feature includes a declaration of MHI and its Group companies' solid commitment to continue offering support toward full recovery going forward.
In explaining the Group's commitment to supporting disaster recovery in Tohoku, the feature describes how MHI and its Group companies have sought to fulfill their social responsibility by undertaking activities to enable swift recovery of power generation facilities and other social infrastructure that had been previously delivered to the disaster region. It also elucidates the Groupwide stress on voluntary initiatives such as providing relief funds and materials and assisting in debris removal efforts. It further introduces how the MHI Group companies to date have contributed to the affected region through various social initiatives: teaching special science classes in local schools, offering rugby lessons, hosting factory visits, providing scholarships to college students, etc. MHI and its Group companies believe that the most crucial aspects of recovery will come in the future, and in conjunction with this stance they have declared their commitment to apply their comprehensive capabilities and advanced technological expertise where they are most needed, and to lend support in every way possible to enable the children of Tohoku to have dreams and goals for the future.
The "Activities Report" is divided into four sections. The first section, titled "Together with the Customer," describes how the MHI Group has supported restoration and recovery of social and industrial infrastructure: for example, by assisting in recovery of thermal power generation facilities, by helping to stabilize the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company, Incorporated (TEPCO), by participating in the Fukushima Floating Offshore Wind Farm Demonstration Project (Fukushima FORWARD) funded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, etc. The second section of the "Activities Report," which is titled "Together with the Disaster Victims," reports on activities such as the dispatch of employees to perform volunteer work in the disaster zone, support of medical care through use of MHI's corporate jet and company medical facilities, the donation of prefabricated storage refrigeration units to a disaster-stricken fisheries cooperative, etc.
The third section is titled "For Those who will Take Charge of Recovery in the Future." Activities introduced here include supporting career-oriented education through the teaching of science classes in local schools and hosting of factory visits, awarding of special scholarships and holding sessions to interact with scholarship recipients. The fourth section, titled "To Connect People," describes such activities as a system for providing modest financial assistance to support the creation of jobs to enable self-sustained recovery and community revival, sponsorship of charity musicals, and voluntary activities whereby photographs damaged in the tsunami disaster are cleaned to facilitate their return to their owners.
The accompanying "Activities Map" plots the Group's various support activities on a map of the disaster region, with separate icons for each type of support assistance. The "Activities List" is a comprehensive listing of all Group activities to date.
The MHI Group is fully committed to continue its support activities in Tohoku to help the region achieve swift recovery and enable its further growth and development in the years ahead.
