Tokyo, December 22, 2014 - The PurePower PW1100G-JM aero engine, which Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Aero Engine, Ltd. (MHIAEL) has been jointly developing as a member of Japanese Aero Engines Corporation (JAEC) with Pratt & Whitney (P&W) of the U.S. and MTU Aero Engines AG (MTU) of Germany, has been issued a type certificate (TC) by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The PW1100G-JM engine is to be used for the A320neo (new engine option) of the Airbus A320 jetliner family. With the issuance of this type certificate, the PW1100G-JM has been officially approved for operational use as a commercial aero engine.

Development of the PW1100G-JM began in 2011, led by International Aero Engines (IAE) LLC, a joint venture established by P&W, JAEC and MTU. MHIIAEL is responsible for production of parts for combustor components and assembly of the combustor modules, which accounts for about 2.3% of the program. Applying its expertise in high-speed laser machining and other advanced technologies, MHIAEL contributes to the reduction of engine weight and enhancement of fuel efficiency.

The A320neo, a new single-aisle, passenger aircraft, is expected to go into service in the fourth quarter of 2015. The aircraft has a capacity of 120 to 200 passengers, which is the capacity range most in demand in the airline industry. Airbus has already booked 3,800 firm orders for the A320neo, of which 1,100 will use the PW1100G-JM engine. With increased recognition of the aircraft's advantages, orders for A320neo with PW1100G-JM engines are expected to grow.

MHIAEL was launched in October 1, 2014 as a commercial aero engine company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI). The company is jointly owned by MHI (89%), the Development Bank of Japan (10%) and IHI Corporation (1%).

Going forward, MHIAEL will continue to contribute to the development of the Japanese commercial aero engine industry as a member of IAE and JAEC, with a particular focus on enhanced fuel efficiency and engine reliability.
