Tokyo, December 5, 2016 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd., a Group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has developed a fluorocarbon-free commercial refrigeration condensing unit, dubbed the "HCCV1001," that uses the natural refrigerant of carbon dioxide (CO2). The HCCV1001 simultaneously achieves environmental benefits and excellent operating efficiency through the incorporation of a wide array of advanced refrigeration technologies, including MHI's proprietary two-stage "GSR" (scroll and rotary) compressor using CO2 as its refrigerant. The new condensing unit will respond to demand for energy savings and easing of environmental loads in cold-storage facilities and the refrigerated and frozen food display cases used in supermarkets, etc. The HCCV1001 is due to go on sale in April 2017.

The HCCV1001 operates at 10 horsepower (HP). Its R744 CO2 refrigerant has an ozone depletion potential (ODP) of zero and global warming potential (GWP) of 1, so the HCCV1001 contributes significantly to protecting the ozone layer and curbing global warming, particularly in comparison to the hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), which are widely used today. Because the R744 refrigerant can flow in the middle-pressure range, adoption of the HCCV1001 leads to decreased on-site construction costs. Also, since the condensing unit can be operated in an ambient range of -15°C to +43°C and an operating temperature range of -45°C to -5°C, it can accommodate diverse refrigeration and freezing needs.

Sustaining this outstanding performance is MHI's two-stage compressor integrating a scroll compressor and a rotary compressor, at the first stage compression, a rotary compression mechanism is adopted, which offers advantages at low-pressure ratios, and at the second stage compression, the scroll compression one is adopted, which is useful for high-pressure ratios. The adoption of gas injection, featuring a gas-liquid separator in the intermediate-pressure vessel, ensures refrigerating capacity and high efficiency throughout the HCCV1001's entire operating range.

The HCCV1001's maximum pipe length is set at 100 meters (m), equivalent to units of the same capacity that use a fluorocarbon refrigerant. This feature allows for the convenient replacement of existing units. In addition, it also facilitates mixed installations through the use of the same external dimensions as outdoor units of MHI's multi system air-conditioners for commercial applications.

The above advancements have been made possible applying the technologies and expertise accumulated by MHI in the process of developing numerous refrigeration products.

Going forward, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems will continue to focus on developing high-performance products that use low-GWP refrigerants and natural refrigerants, further expanding its series lineup as a way of contributing to protection of the earth's environment throughout the global market.
