For ExxonMobil Chemical's New Petrochemical Complex in Singapore
For ExxonMobil Chemical's New Petrochemical Complex in Singapore
Tokyo, September 18, 2007 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has been awarded a contract by ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. for two large-scale polyethylene (PE) units with a combined production capacity of 1,300,000 tons per year. Finishing, packaging, and shipping facilities for both PE units and a new polypropylene (PP) line are included in the contract. This contract is part of ExxonMobil Chemical's second petrochemical complex which will be located at and integrated with its existing chemical plant on Jurong Island in Singapore, an island located southwest of the main island. MHI will be responsible for detailed plant design, supply and procurement of equipment, and on-site construction work. Mitsubishi Corporation is handling the trade particulars.
The PE plant will consist of two 650,000 ton/year production facilities. MHI will also build finishing, packaging and shipping facilities for PE and PP. PE is a chemical product used as raw material for making general-purpose vinyl/plastics, etc. The PE produced at the new plant will help meet sharply increasing demand for the material in Asia, especially in China.
ExxonMobil Chemical is a petrochemical manufacturing and marketing unit of Exxon Mobil Corporation, the U.S. oil major. ExxonMobil Chemical already has a large-scale petrochemical complex in Singapore, and the company has decided to add a second large-scale production complex in response to rapidly expanding market demands.
MHI has already delivered 12 PE plants to the industry. Recent orders include plants for Jilin Chemical in China in 1994 (completed in 1997), JG Summit in the Philippines in 1995 (completed in 1998), YANPET in Saudi Arabia in 1997 (completed in 2000) and Petroquimica Morelos in Mexico in 2003 (completed in 2007). MHI has also received orders from ExxonMobil Chemical for numerous heavy-duty compressor turbines for ethylene plants.
With the new order, besides further solidifying its firm relationship with ExxonMobil Chemical; MHI will now move to conduct aggressive marketing activities for its PE plants on broad fronts.
