Tokyo, August 6, 2020 - On July 22, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) was awarded 3-star Eruboshi ("L-Star," for Labor Star) certification, the highest grade, by the Japanese Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare for its superior contribution to the empowerment of female employees in line with the national Act on Promotion of Women’s Participation and Advancement in the Workplace. The 3-star designation signifies that MHI satisfies the criteria in all five categories assessing how well workplaces enable women employees to fully manifest their abilities. The five categories are recruitment, continued employment, working hours, proportion of women in managerial positions, and diversity of career courses.
MHI has long promoted active participation and advancement of female employees in conjunction with its quest to enhance diversity in order to further accelerate its global expansion and become a company that consistently generates robust earnings. Since 2005 MHI has implemented measures to expand and improve its in-house systems, both those required by law and those enacted independently; these include systems offering child-care leave or reduced hours, leave to undergo infertility treatment, a career return program, various funding support options, etc. In addition, in 2014 the company set a target of increasing the number of women employees in managerial positions threefold by 2020. Efforts have focused on expanding the number of female employees, providing career support through child or family care leave, pursuing planned development of female managerial positions, and implementing diverse career advancement initiatives, including nurturing of a corporate culture conducive to female empowerment.
Greatly encouraged by receipt of the highest Eruboshi certification, going forward MHI will take further steps to make promotion of women’s participation and advancement in the workplace a central pillar of its diversity management strategy, aiming toward sustained growth as a truly global company.
