・ Extension from Taipa Island to near Border Gate area of the Macau Peninsula, assist to improve alleviation on traffic congestion

Tokyo, February 29, 2024 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order for the Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) system (Note1) from the Public Works Bureau (DSOP) of the Macau Special Administrative Region of China, for the Macau Light Rapid Transit (LRT) (Note2) "East Line". MHI will lead the entire system including signals, communication systems, power distribution systems, guideway work, platform screen doors, and automated fare collection systems, excluding construction of station buildings and civil engineering work.

The East Line will have 6 stations along a length of 7.65km, from the Taipa Line (11 stations, 9.3km that commenced operations in December 2019) to the Gongbei area, where there is a border gate with China and approximately 300,000 people come and go daily. This Line will connect Taipa Island to a newly developed area (reclaimed land) in the eastern part of the Macau Peninsula through an underground tunnel, which is expected to increase the number of users, improve transportation convenience, and alleviate traffic congestion.

For passenger service, the existing cars that already delivered for the Taipa Line and Barra Extension Line (1 station expansion, 3.2km, that commenced operations in December 2023) will be utilized. For Backup Access Vehicle (BAV) for firefighters, it is equipped with a lithium-ion storage battery. Introducing electric BAV instead of conventional diesel-powered access vehicles will contribute to ensuring safety of the East Line, which is mainly occupied underground tunnel and reducing environmental impact.

This is the fifth MHI project for the Macau LRT following the Taipa Line, the Barra Extension Line, the ongoing Seac Pai Van Extension Line (2 stations plus transfer station expansion, 1.6km), and Hengqin Extension Line (2 station expansions, 2.2km) (Note3). MHI will be working with Top Builders Macau Co. Ltd. and Hou Chun Construction and Engineering Company Limited in the same project formation as the consortium for the latest two projects including Seac Pai Van Extension Line and Hengqin Extension Line.

Following the opening of the Barra Extension Line in December 2023, the Macau LRT has seen an increase in number of passengers. MHI will further contribute to advancing the regional economy and human resources development through the implementation of the East Line.

Going forward, MHI Group will continue to work closely with its worldwide offices to provide services of high added value responding to customer needs and supply new solutions such as the remote monitoring technology of "ΣSynX (Sigma Syncs) Supervision," MHI's digital innovation brand. In addition, through the provision of AGT system - a clean transport mode that emits no CO2 - MHI Group aims to respond to regional aspirations around the globe with solutions that will contribute to economic development and enhanced transportation convenience, while simultaneously helping to realize a low-carbon society.

  • 1AGT systems are a new type of fully automated transport system with electric power drives, used in airports around the world to provide mobility between terminals and to nearby facilities. The system utilizes rubber tires to provide a smooth ride with low noise.
  • 2The original abbreviation of LRT as "light rail transit" is widely used, but Macau LRT instead uses it to mean "light rapid transit" after the system's high-speed performance.
