MHI Thermal Systems Conducts Science Classes on Temperature Alteration at Two Elementary Schools in Kiyosu, Aichi
Every year Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd., a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, conducts science classes at elementary schools located near its various works. The classes are designed to convey the wonders of science and technology to the children who will form the next generation, through experiments using everyday materials.
For the 2019 fiscal year, classes were held for sixth graders of two schools in Kiyosu, the city in Aichi Prefecture where MHI Thermal Systems' Biwajima Works is located: Nishibiwajima Elementary School on November 26 and Kojo Elementary School on December 5. Young employees were dispatched to conduct a program of experiments to give the students a firsthand understanding of the "warmth" or "coldness" of specific materials.
In one experiment, a bow drill was used to generate frictional heat. The students confirmed the resulting changes in temperature using a thermoviewer, a device that enables the temperatures of materials to be expressed in different colors. In another experiment, they experienced, by touching containers, how the temperature of water changes when various chemical agents − for example, silica gel of the kind commonly used as a desiccant − are dissolved in the water. In the final experiment, the children made orange sherbet by applying the principle that when salt is added to ice, the temperature becomes even lower.
The students listened attentively to the instructors' explanations and watched or took part in the experiments with great interest.
Going forward, MHI Group will continue to communicate closely with its local communities, undertaking an array of activities to support the development of the next generation in line with its CSR Action Guidelines' commitments to "create a more harmonious society" and "inspire the future."
