MOL Comfort Containership Incident Update (No.6)
The following is a further update on the incident involving the MOL Comfort containership operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) in the Indian Ocean on June 17.
<Situation at the Site>
On June 27, MOL announced that at 16:48 JST (11:48 Dubai time) that day the aft part of the containership sank in open sea. MOL further announced that no large volume of oil leakage was confirmed , and the fore part of the vessel is being stably towed.
MHI will continue to work closely with MOL and the classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) to investigate and determine the cause of the incident. Every effort will also be made, in cooperation with all parties concerned, to conduct countermeasures such as hull structure strengthening of the MOL Comfort's sister vessels and quasi-sister vessels as a precautionary measure.
