Demonstration Test of Immersion Cooling System Achieved 94% Cut in Power Consumption
KDDI Corporation, MHI and NEC Networks & System Integration Corporation conducted a demonstration in which 100kVA class servers and other IT equipment along with an immersion cooling system were housed in a data center for a test run.
We developed an immersion cooling system including a free cooling unit that performs optimized air cooling and achieved a 94% cut in energy consumed to cool the servers, with a PUE of 1.05. In addition, high availability was obtained in the immersion cooling and free cooling units, confirming stable operation and viability of use of such equipment to achieve a Tier 4 level (highest quality for data centers) immersion cooling data center.
New Model of3,000 kVA Class Generator Set Rolled Out for Facilities Like Data Centers, Backed by Its Worldwide Sales Records and Reliability
The MGS-R Series is a power generation system produced by MHI Group (Note2) known for outstanding reliability, with and boasts sales of 12,000 total units worldwide.
(Note2) The power generation equipment designed by engine manufacturer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engine & Turbocharger, Ltd. (MHIET), and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engine System Asia Pte. Ltd. and MHI Engine System Vietnam Co., Ltd., which assemble and sell engines and power systems in Asia-Pacific region.
Launched in 2023, the MGS3100R is the highest output model in the series to meet higher power demands for emergency generator sets. It realizes top-class space saving and contributes to improved use of space for installation. It complies with Class G3 load acceptance performance, which is the highest class in the ISO standards for dynamic characteristics of generating sets, and it complies with rapid 10-second starting specified by the National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA110 performance requirements for emergency power supply systems. It meets the performance and quality standards for data center operators and other applications.
Test Operation of Container-type Data Center Proven Power Savings
In 2021, KDDI Corporation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), and NEC Nets-SI, Ltd jointly conducted validation testing for operating an immersion cooling system housed in a 12-foot shipping container with a 50kVA class server and other IT equipment. This proved the reduced power consumption by 43% compared to conventional data center models and achieved a PUE of 1.07 in a compact container-type data center.
Container-type data centers offer the key advantage of shorter lead time for construction. Their ease of installation can also significantly make it applicable to wider installation environments and conditions for data centers, enabling flexible construction in a variety of places.
